The Islington-born star made her name as an actress in the early 1990s, before moving behind the camera to produce. She lives in Primrose Hill

You grew up in Camden. What are your earliest memories of London?

What I remember about growing up in Camden is the canal and Primrose Hill park. What I love about the area and what makes it so beautiful is that it hasn’t really changed very much.

What are your favourite London theatres?

Soho Theatre, Trafalgar Studios and the Barbican. I enjoy a lot of the smaller theatres that develop new talent and new plays.

You played the legendary Gypsy Rose Lee in a production of Britten in Brooklyn at Wilton’s Music Hall. Do you have a dream role?

I’ve always thought Maggie Pollitt from Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is such a wonderfully spirited character.

You were famously part of the Primrose Hill set back in the 1990s. You’ve said you have ‘grown up and got serious’ since those days – do you think the area has changed, too?

At that time, there seemed to be a lot of young people living in the area, it seems now that the area is a lot quieter. I think a lot of people moved to east London. It’s a very residential area, so the architecture hasn’t changed that much, which I like a lot.

Can you recommend any hidden gems in London?

My favourite hidden gem is any Everyman cinema, where I can cosy up and get comfortable, drink and eat while watching my favourite movie – bliss!

A Grade II-listed former railway engine shed, The Roundhouse has played host to such influential acts as The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and Otis Redding

You still live in the area – what do you like about it and where are your favourite places to go?

Primrose Hill has legendary views, there are some lovely restaurants such as Odette’s and Lemonia. There’s a real community spirit with the locals putting on fêtes and fairs throughout the year.

You recently co-wrote a wellbeing book. How has yoga helped you throughout your career, and where do you go when you need a bit of peace and quiet?

Modern life seems very stressful. We’re all living in very fast times due to technology. Yoga and taking care of myself can compensate for that. When I need time out in London, I go to Hampstead Heath, or Triyoga or Indaba yoga centres.

What is your favourite restaurant in London?

Lemonia has been my favourite for many years. If I want to go out in town I might go to Casa Cruz or Nobu.

What is your favourite London building?

The Roundhouse.

Where is your favourite London view?

Hampstead Heath.

Who is your favourite Londoner?

Eliza Doolittle.
